Infrastructures of Braga Sports Complex
Câmara Municipal de Braga
Souto Moura Arquitectos, SA
The Sports Complex is located on soil with difficult topographical and geological features. The site is characterized by a green valley with water courses and part of the building (due to the topography), is built in areas of excavation and embankment strongly pronounced that's why the design/implementation of the project and works demanded deep adaptations.
The implantation of the stadium took place in the highest area with underlying rock and the construction of the swimming pools and sports centre is proposed to be constructed in the area of the valley where there is considerable depth of soft and marshy soil.
The geology and topology of the site for the new sports complex is not simple, and the concept of the project required extensive remodeling. The site has a higher area of underlying rock and a lower area - the valley of an existing watercourse. The construction of the new stadium required the execution of excavations in rock on a grand scale, in fact 1,300,000 cubic meters. During the construction, the existing watercourse will be temporarily diverted.
The proposed integration of the watercourse is based on its maintenance, wherever possible, in the topsoil bed, with margins set and stabilized by topographical features or in conjunction with the planting of the appropriate vegetation, or dry stone walls. For security reasons is not feasible to keep the watercourse in the outdoors, it is foreseen the construction of canals/aqueducts.
The infrastructure included, in addition to the diversion of existing public sewer, the stabilization of rock surfaces, installation of all services, the construction of new access roads and car parks. The main access route was ensured by the construction of a tunnel connected to the main areas of use.
