Integrated in the exquisite Monchique Spa, located in the interior of the Algarve, Southern Portugal, the Thermal Hotel was the object of a profound remodelling; afa was responsible for the structural and public health installations.
In structural terms, the largest intervention was done in the ground floor, in which the existing floor was lowered for the implementation of an interior swimming pool with large dimensions, obliging to the elimination of the existing pillars and their substitution for a metallic grill that supported the roof slab (that was maintained) with significant span.
The excavation implied great conception, detail and monitoring, of the construction, due to the proximity of existing elements that could not suffer any damage whatsoever. It was equally necessary to dimension a buried technical gallery adjacent to the swimming pool, and guaranteeing rigorous conditions of water tightness and good functioning, durability of the materials during their life span.
Particularly complex, the Project of public health facilities had a special attention not only due to the current supply of the common services of the hotel, rooms and swimming pool, but also because of the various circuits of therapeutical water for all water treatments available to the customers.
Finally, it is important to emphasize the importance of the pluvial water design in the totality of the involving area of the Hotel. Due to its implementation in a very narrow valley, where there is a great concentration of water in the rainy seasons.
