The São Gabriel and São Rafael Towers are two 90 metre high buildings situated on the site of the recent Expo 98 in Lisbon. Each building has five basement levels and twenty five floors of flats above ground level. The ground level is used for access areas, heath clubs etc.
aqfassociados were commissioned to carry out the design of the water supply and drainage systems. Separately was commissioned to carry out a full structural design review.
Due to the amount of space that was required for the technical services, it was necessary a high level of coordination to ensure that the plan area of the service ducts was optimised. The spaces required for these services were considered to be part of the design at the earliest stage due to their effect on the architectural planning.
Due to the height of the building special features were required for the water supply and drainage systems in the vertical direction to increase the flow or equalize the pressure. In the case of the water supply this entailed intermediate pumping stations to provide the necessary pressure at the points of delivery – the taps.
The vertical drain runs used a fully ventilated single stack system. Just below the lowest level of residential accommodation, the first floor, the vertical runs are collected into two major pipes. Similarly the vertical ventilation ducts are collected, but this time at the top of the building, to reduce the number of roof penetrations.
The fire fighting strategy was to have sprinkler systems in the basement levels and hose reel outlets on the upper floors. The hose reel system is “wet”, that is already full of water at pressure. To guarantee the necessary water pressure at all the levels, the pumped risers feed the different height zones via pressure reduction valves.
