Underpassage at Campo Alegre Street
Câmara Municipal do Porto
This underpassage, built in the centre of Oporto, functions as an exit from the city linking to the Via de Cintura Interna, a dual carriageway that encircles the city.
The concern was to reduce the urban impact of the underpassage which was achieved by planting in, over and around it. Above the underpassage there are areas of planting and the exit ramps have “overhead” flower beds.
The ground conditions did not presented any special difficulties so the whole project could be constructed in “in situ” reinforced concrete.
Such a deep intervention in this urban area required the rerouting of the numerous infrastructure services such as drainage and water supply. All of these had to be redesigned and agreed with the various statutory authorities. Included in this redesign was the addition of the services required by the underpassage itself – drainage and the electrical supply to the traffic signs.
