afa was chosen to act as the lead consultant for this design of a coffee processing plant in Paredes, a town close to Oporto in Portugal.
The plant was for the extraction of caffeine from the coffee using the “Natural” method. The coffee beans pass through several tanks of chemicals. These tanks are stacked vertically and the coffee passes from the top to the bottom.
For this process a steel tower was built to support all the tanks and the necessary conveyors. Close cooperation with the suppliers of the chemical process equipment was required. This was to ensure that all tolerances and deflections of the support tower met their specifications.
The sewage system had to deal with the entire chemical products from the process.
afa also designed all the infrastructures and the office building.
