The expansion and renovation of the facilities of the Maia Jumbo, located in the place of Chiolo, parish of Barca, had as primary objective to organize physical, visual and functionally the whole of the current Jumbo store in its relation with new "Retail" shop and with all the surroundings.
This intervention involves the construction of a new building where the several "Retail" shops will work, interconnected through a covered outer space with the current Jumbo store. This volume presents a construction area of approximately 11.600sqm.
The existing commercial space will suffer a renewal of the façades and of some stores and shops linked to the commercial gallery. The main store of the current Jumbo is unaffected.
The reorganization of the outer space, including the demolition of adjacent buildings: "Mestre Mako", "McDonalds" and "Centro Auto", the construction of an underground car park with about 26.000sqm, and the construction of a new volume to restaurants with an area of approximately 2.600sqm will be the major changes to be made.
In this commercial complex different types of structural solutions were projected.
The roof of the building, which is the "Retail", will be made in metal structures due to the need to define 16.0x16.0sqm spans.
The structure of the basement will be made of reinforced concrete. The slabs will be fungiformes supported directly on the pillars, clusters and peripheral contention walls.
Given the high heterogeneity of the foundation land and because of the groundwater level, the structural solutions to be adopted will be adjusted to each identified area. Thus, the foundations will be made in areas where the land has ability to mobilize foundation tensions are at lower depths and where the more changed land at surface, limited to less significant thicknesses influence a higher groundwater level; and the solutions of indirect foundations, preferably through stakes moulded on the ground, for the remaining areas, where the land with the appropriate characteristics to hold the foundation loads and the groundwater level is at greater depth.
The project of the mechanical facilities concerning to the rehabilitation of the Maia Jumbo, driven by new energy legislation (RSECE) was object of an integrated economic, environmental and energy approach on a concept of "Building System".
The challenge of the rehabilitation / extension of an existing building is greater, since there is a need for harmony between the facilities to be built and those who already exist. The challenge was exceeded during the development of the project, where all the steps and options had the only concern of following the path of energy efficiency, the establishment of air quality inside, the reuse of equipments, advising the architecture to adjust and designing an environment consistent with the relationship climate / heat gains from outside and the design of efficient lighting systems.
In this sense the “Maia Jumbo" will walk hand in hand with the tripod of world development that currently defines the concept of sustainability: Economy - Energy - Environment.
