In this Competition afaconsult was part of a multidisciplinary team of Engineering which also incorporates the international consultants AVIAPLAN COWI. At that stage of Competition, the team established the general programmatic groundwork for the New Airport, in a coordinated manner with the architectural concept of Eduardo Souto Moura.
Great public undertaking of national interest, the construction of the New Airport involves the obvious efficiency of exploration from the airport traffic, and its conjunction with a number of factors, as diverse, as the interconnection with the network of land transport (road and rail), the landscape integration with the environment and a future "city of services" associated with the airport, environmental protection measures, etc.
Together with the architectural and the functional design of the main buildings that constitute the Airport (Passenger Terminal and Cargo, Airport Maintenance, Facilities for Baggage Handling, the Control Tower, Facilities for Fire-fighters, Public Entities and Fuel Supply), all these issues of integration were considered - with particular emphasis on the preparatory work of the whole implantation area, as the regularization of the existing watercourses (Alvarinho, Ota and Alenquer rivers).
