The complex from the Sport Science and Gymnastics Faculty established in a wide area, in the Polo II of the University of Coimbra, comprehends several sports facilities (game fields covered and uncovered, skating track, and indoor pool) and buildings for the classroom, library and offices.
This functional diversity and dispersion of equipment in a geographically very rugged terrain, represents a challenge for the engineering, architectural aggravated by the requirement of a great conceptual purity, with large structural spans, predominance of external façades in concrete in sight, no ceilings common areas, etc..
There is vital role from the interdisciplinary coordination, from foundations established by the Architecture and viabilised by Structures (in this very "visible" project), with the optimization of general infrastructure networks (very important for the enormous distances involved), the minimisation of points of conflict and the primordial option by passive or natural lighting systems or air conditioning.
Given the characteristics of buildings to be built, including the main sports equipments covered with large free high span support (gymnasiums, swimming pool), opted wherever possible, precast structural solutions of prestressed reinforced concrete. These solutions are more economic than metal and capable of implementation by currents, rather laborious (to avoid formwork in great height) and faster than the traditional construction of reinforced concrete.
It's an ecological characteristic of the Project the collection, treatment and recycling of rainwater and sewer system through constructed wetlands, taking advantage from the generous outside areas that are part of the Faculty and the surrounding game fields.
