The new headquarters building for the Bank of the Cape Verde islands, an independent Portuguese speaking country, was designed by the renowned Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. The building project has plot dimensions of approximately 60m by 77m and has three main elements. Two single storey buildings, one of which is an area of high security – the “strong box” – the other containing exhibition spaces and auditoria and a six story administrative block.
The climate in the Cape Verde Islands has year round elevated atmospheric temperatures with frequent high humidity. To provide acceptable working conditions the air conditioning system has to reduce the temperature but especially to reduce the humidity. This aspect of the project was studied in depth not only to identify appropriate strategies but also to provide detail design information.
Due to the acute lack of water on the islands all rainwater will be drained into storage tanks. There will be separate tanks for fire fighting, irrigation and low quality supply. The low quality supply will be used, for example, for flushing toilets and urinals.
Much of the structure is to be made of visible white concrete.
