Showroom and car park for "MOVIFLOR"
Moviflor is a company that has furniture superstores throughout Portugal. The new showrooms and car park for Oporto were built on the site of an existing factory. A planning requirement was that two of the existing facades were to be kept.
The original project was conceived having a reinforced concrete frame, however to accelerate the construction, an alternative scheme using pre-cast concrete was offered by the leading prefabricated manufacturer Maprel.
Initially only the five floors car park structure were going to be prefabricated, but the use of precast concrete was extended to almost all the structural elements. The slab elements were standard items but the beams and columns were purpose made for the project.
On this particularly case, the beam column joint was designed and detailed to resist bending moments. This was necessary as there didn't exist enough vertical cores to carry the horizontal loads. The joint was developed by Afassociados with Maprel. Vertical loads were transmitted by steel insets cast into the columns and beams. The continuity required to transmit bending moments to the column was provided by the reinforcement embedded on the in situ topping and welded to steel insets cast into the precast columns.
