Norte Shopping is the name of a large shopping centre development on the outskirts of Oporto in northern Portugal. The development includes shopping malls, a cinema complex, car park and eating areas.
Roof top park is accessed via twin spiral ramps that are cantilevered from a vertical concrete cylinder. The cylinder has an internal diameter of 12m and 20m height. The well known architect Eduardo Souto Moura was asked to design a small exhibition space to fit into this cylinder. The space is accessed from the main shopping level via the access ramp. This determined the main entrance level 6m above the base of the cylinder.
The space has two levels, the entrance level and the lower level, which are linked by a steel stair. The stair has three landings and four flights and the whole structure is cantilevered from a concrete wall. The wall itself is only supported, by steel sections, at two points.
Careful analysis was done to check that the stair structure would not vibrate uncomfortably when in use. To avoid vertical loads being transmitted to the concrete wall from the steel framed upper level, the wall was connected horizontally by steel linkages.
For aesthetic reasons the cylinder was lined with beautiful handmade bricks. For acoustic reasons this brick lining had perforated joints and a space of 13cm behind it. To carry the load and to avoid the possibility of cracking, due to shrinkage and temperature movements, the lining is supported independently. These supports are rings of angles, at 5m vertical spacing, fixed to the concrete cylinder by steel cantilever supports.
