This building will integrate the installation of the Primary School, Kindergarten and the Leisure Activities Centre of Mina - Miguel Bombarda, in the parish of Mina, Amadora.
The building of two floors is built around four courtyards, allowing the school to turn into the interior, providing natural light to the passageways. These courtyards allow the interaction between different spaces for students, creating an environment of "open “school.
In the ground floor is located the Library and Computer Science Room, the Dining-hall, the Kitchen, the First Aid Room, the Parents Association Office, the Bathrooms, the Surveillance Room and the Store –room.
At the first floor there are the class and activities rooms of group and Kindergarten, and all spaces linked, directly or indirectly to the teachers.
There is also a half-buried floor where the gym is located and areas to support the smooth functioning of the school.
In the adoption of structural solution to this building, existed a special concern on the materials and construction methods used that could ensure high standards of quality and durability to the building, with reduced maintenance.
The structure of the building is basically in reinforced concrete with pillars and some cross walls over which rely directly, without apparent beams, slabs of reinforced concrete lighted with light concrete blocks.
The structural solution to the gym roof with a 20m span was studied with much care, weighing several factors as: accomplishment of the security factors - the limit state of use, the factors of comfort - the state limit of use, economy, facility of manufacturing and transport. Thus, the solution adopted was the realization of this structural element, with the use of prestressed and pre-manufactured concrete beams with cross section in the form of ?.
The mechanical project tried to explore the potential that the architecture of the building provides, both the installation of thermal insulation levels beyond regulatory, minimizing the influence of climate within the building, and the level of openings exploitation in the blinds boxes for admission of fresh air to insure the ventilation of the spaces (ventilation made by hybrid form). Similarly, particular attention was given to selection of materials with low emissions, harmless to the environment and enable the not increase of fresh air, resulting from here lower energy consumption.
Given the global awareness on the benefits of the use of renewable energy in buildings, this building will be equipped with solar panels for heating water for consumption, following this way the national legislation and ensuring the sustainability at this level.
All the concern surrounding this project intended, beyond the fulfillment of the work owner interests, to make the building more energy-efficient as possible, through the use of high yield equipments (boiler, circulation pumps, fans) to ensure, at the same time, all the interior conditions of comfort that such a building needs.
