The Jewish Museum building was built on a plot where the constructions are in ruin, inside of a traditional urban network block within walls (in the area where they think it was the Jewish Quarter of Trancoso).
Assuming the existence of the block in ruins it was built a building that keeps the geometry of the block corner, with the corner of the walls in acute angle, marking a clear the change in the direction defined by the intersection of the Poço Street and the Poço do Mestre Alley. The volume in granite with an irregular stereotomy, small fenestrations and irregular design assumes the plan of the two streets. This massive character it is also assumed in the design of the interior spaces that are as excavated spaces, as if they were carved spaces within a large granite prism.
The building has 3 floors and the different functional areas are distributed between them.
This building has the peculiarity of having a relatively small area of implantation, creating some difficulties in the equipment distribution of several specialties. The coordination of all specialties allowed the obtaining of solutions that ensure safety, functionality, durability and sustainability criteria, without ever neglecting its economic viability. At a structural level it was created a portico of reinforced concrete structure with a small technical area in metal structure. For the building cooling it was chosen a hydraulic radiating pavement solution. A special care was given to the illumination level in order to obtain an economic situation that was compatible with the museum and the responsible Architect who sought to obtain an consistent environment with the architecture language and with the own environment of this building type.
