The remodelling and enlargment of the António Arroio Secondary School of Fine Arts is part of the Modernization Program of the Secondary Schools Scholarly Park, under the coordination of the EPE Scholarly Park.
The school building is located in the heart of Lisbon, with the main access in the Street Coronel Ferreira do Amaral. It can be described as a compact building, with several bodies of different heights connected with each other, each one of them with a certain number of floors.
The foundation of the school dates back to 1919 in the art teaching, specializing in its history in the teaching of industrial arts. Throughout its existence, following the artistic development of the country, the school developed new skills in the field of plastic arts, product design, audiovisual communication, communication design and product design. This widening of the skills and the creation of new courses, associated with an increase in the number of students imposed a profound restructuring of the existing school, with an increase in area of construction and reorganization of existing facilities.
According to the Scholarly Program, the project foresees a deep intervention in all existing buildings, corresponding to a general restructuring and enlargement of the existing buildings, building up a new floor on the Main Building. In addition is also proposed the construction of three new buildings.
The functional diversity resulting from the multiplicity of skills of the intended education, associated with the inherent difficulty of an intervention on the existing building, with uninterrupted operation during the construction phase, represented a challenge to the various engineering. The designers sought the implementation of simple systems and design solutions that ensure the operation requirements of a school building, economically viable and with simple maintenance.
The Project developed an earthquake-resistant behavior study of the existing buildings, respecting the requirements defined in European regulations (EC8) and it was verified the need for structural reinforcements of some "key" elements.
