Al-Assad Culture & Arts Centre is a building conceived as being denoted by three main values: symbolic, complex and contemporary:
- Symbolic, as an expression of a special culture and its own architectural values;
- Complex, because its programme contains in one single volume an Opera House with 1600 places (of which 760 are in the hall, 450 in a first balcony and 390 in the second balcony), a multi-usage Auditorium with 500 sitting places places and a Public Library for 1,000,000 documents;
- Contemporary, in the sense that it makes use of the best «state of the art» technical practices that converges in buildings like this.
The concept of the façades defines clearly the building's image. The adopted constructive system makes use of an industrial mounting system, since the repetitive pattern that was designed favours its choice. The design of these elements has a figurative origin but is treated in a rather abstract manner. It is based upon the form of the leave of the pistachio tree and the fruit itself, that when repeated along the surface of the façade bears a suggestion of some sort of weaving or tissue. The implicit idea is to evoke a sense of lightness and transparency.
