The pedestrian bridges are the major component of the layout plan of the “River System” promoting a linkage between the various pedestrian paths and cycle paths as defined in the projects of the various Intervention Areas of the Leiria Polis Program. There are five pedestrian areas, four included in the “Polis Intervention Areas” and another one included in “other intervention areas”. 

The Polis areas are: Pedestrian bridge of S. Romão park, Pedestrian bridge by the Quinta da Fábrica, Firemen / St Agostinho Pedestrian bridge and the DRM Pedestrian bridge, corresponding to the following projects: bridge of S. Romão park, Bridge of the Olhalvas park, Bridge of the St Agostinho Garden, and Bridge of the St Agostinho Convent, respectively. Another action which will complement the Polis intervention will be the one at the end of the Sá Carneiro Bridge whose projected bridge shall be named Bridge of the Municipal Market.

All bridges are in a topographically plain area, always with a marked descending slope that defines the riverbed. It is a markedly urban zone although the S. Romão bridge is located in a rural surrounding. Riverbanks can be planted with trees or used for streets and buildings. Care should be exercised regarding flooding levels for a ratio of hundred years' maximum flooding levels, and lower levels should be imposed on the bridge lower deck surface. All this was done as part of a process where all different team specialisation characteristics within the engineering field.
